Meet the Horses

Caring for a herd of horses is no small task and takes a group effort. The amount of organization, attention to detail, daily physical work and vigilance to keep all our equines, both large and small, ready for our students is often not realized by those unfamiliar with horses. Feeding and watering alone is a 365 day a year job. It is a “no holidays off” commitment. Next, there is manure removal, grooming, veterinarian checkups and appointments, deworming, farrier care, tack fitting, and training tune-ups that must be addressed. If a horse becomes sick, lame or just plain grumpy (happens to horses just like people sometimes!), more time and effort is spent in an effort to improve or resolve the issue. When a new horse is needed, there are many hours that are spent selecting and then in acclimating and training before the horse even enters a class. All this work is done so that ultimately our students can enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of interacting with our horses. The physically and mentally healthier the horse, the better the experience at Agapé will be for the student. Thank you to all our staff and volunteers who continue day in and day out to put in time and effort towards the care of our horses.

Do you have a favorite horse at Agapé, that you would like to “adopt”? Your financial support can bring you many rewards as well as assist Agapé in our horse care. Here are our horses currently available for adoption:

  • Randi

Randi - 2007 Horse of the Year Adopt Me

I have a freeze brand on the left side of my neck that shows that I am a BLM Mustang. I was born out West on land that was managed by the Bureau of Land Management. I was eventually adopted by a family from Indiana and then donated to Agapé so I am quite the traveler. I have been told that I am one of the most popular horses among students, volunteers and instructors at Agapé because I get along well with everybody.

  • Seth

Seth - 2006 Horse of the Year Adopt Me

I am an American Halflinger and was born in Feb of 93. My owner is Carol Briggs, better know as the craft lady. I have two jobs at Agapé. The kids get to ride me and I sometimes pull a 4 wheel carriage. In 2006 I was chosen Horse of the Year. Blondes Rule!

  • Cowboy

    Cowboy Adopt Me

Cowboy is a Tobiano Paint that was donated to us by Jane Howard. Cowboy spent his previous life doing parades, team penning, cutting, and flag ceremonies! He loves people and has adapted to therapeutic riding easily!

  • Darby

    Darby Adopt Me

Darby is a lover with lots of personality. When he pulls his cart he is a show stopper. The kids often put ribbons, beads and scarf's in his mane and tail. Painting his hooves with sparkles is another favorite project for the kids. This little mini has a heart of gold with a willing to please attitude.

  • Dolly

    Dolly Adopt Me

I arrived at Agapé  in September of 2010. I passed my trial period at Agapé with flying colors and have been fully incorporated into the program ever since. I am also the only buckskin colored horse at Agapé.

  • Duchess

    Duchess Adopt Me

Duchess is a brown and white pinto miniature and the proud mother of Stormy. She also visits schools and hospitals. Kids love to dress her up, braid her mane and tail, and take her for a walk to show off their handy work.

  • Easy

    Easy Adopt Me

I am a slow, steady type who helps to make my riders feel safe. I am very quiet even with students who are nervous and wiggly. I am a horse that is frequently selected for all types of riders so I know that means the instructors feel I am a trustworthy kind of guy.

  • George

    George Adopt Me

I am a Quarter Horse gelding who arrived at Agapé in September 2011. I passed my thirty day trial period and am now an “official” Agapé horse, but I am still learning the ropes of my new job. I love all of the attention that I get from students and volunteers.

  • Jitterbug

    Jitterbug Adopt Me

I was born in 1989. My name fits me well because I have a fast trot and sometimes holding still is hard for me. I am a Quarter Pony who loves his job.

  • Lilfoot

    Lilfoot Adopt Me

I am excited to tell you that I was the 2009 Agapé Horse of the Year! Staff and volunteers say that I can be counted on to safely carry our most challenged riders as well as our more independent students. Not all therapy horses are that versatile! As a registered American Paint Horse with flashy coloring, I also stand out in a crowd.

  • Nashee

    Nashee Adopt Me

I have been at Agapé since 2005 so I have been here long enough to provide many wonderful experiences in the saddle for my riders at Agapé. I have smooth, comfortable gaits and am the only horse at Agapé that is part Tennessee Walking Horse.

  • Nick

    Nick Adopt Me

Nick is a big, bay Quarter Horse who spent his earlier career as a police horse with the Indianapolis Police Department Horse Patrol. His previous training with the police department is a perfect fit with therapeutic riding. Nick has a calm, gentle presence and is a wonderful mount for our taller riders

  • Patti

    Patti Adopt Me

Before coming to Agapé I lived in Northern Indiana with an Amish family. I used to help clear fields. Now at Agapé I pull a wheel-chair accessible carriage in addition to being ridden in classes. I am quite versatile for the program!

  • Prince

    Prince Adopt Me

I am the smallest and youngest of all the miniature horses.Even so, I visit schools and attend community events. I am a small but great Agapé ambassador. There's a reason that people say good things come in small packages!

  • Rosie

    Rosie Adopt Me

This little horse is a giant at Agapé with lots of history. She has touched so many lives over the years it is hard to pick one story to tell you about. Rosie has been in schools, nursing homes, hospitals, elevators at several sporting events, not to mention the Indiana all Morgan Horse Show at the fairgournds.

  • Sheba

    Sheba Adopt Me

I used to be a trail horse before coming to Agapé but have been providing therapeutic riding lessons for children at Agapé since 2005.  I am a full blooded Morgan and have a beautiful dark and shiny coat.

  • Spice

    Spice Adopt Me

I arrived at Agapé in July 2011 and am a gaited pony. That means that I can do more gaits besides just the walk, trot and canter of a typical pony or horse. Theses extra gaits are referred to as the “easy gaits” because they are generally very smooth for the rider.

  • Stormy

    Stormy Adopt Me

I am the only horse on the property who was born at Agapé. My mother is Duchess, one of the other Agapé miniature horses. I have quite the personality and my claim to fame is showing off in nursing homes carrying red carnations for all the people. One of these days I will pull a little cart.
