Agapé Therapeutic Riding Center
Carriage Driving
Agapé offers carriage driving for those students who want to learn to drive a horse, who choose not to ride, or may not be able to ride. They learn the art of horse psychology watching the horse in front of the carriage, and thinking ahead of the horse. Student drivers work on coordination, cognitive processing, tactile planning, speaking, and memory improvement. As much as possible, the student driver assists in grooming and harnessing the horse. Drivers also learn how to put the horse and carriage together. Student drivers, with the desire and drive, work towards demonstrating their talents and skills in public performances and driving in horse shows.
Agapé has two wheelchair accessible carriages, designed by Thornlea Carriages, Wabash, Indiana. Special features of these carriages include a back that folds down and is equipped with a lift, similar to a school bus lift for wheelchairs to enter, and move to the front of the carriage to drive. An Instructor and/or an Able Bodied Whip attend each student driver. Agapé has a NARHA Certified Driving Instructor supervising each driving lesson.
